Another Suffolk post, maybe not what you were looking for when you were searching for things to do in Norfolk. However, Africa Alive is in Kessingland, not too far from Lowestoft, meaning it’s only about 40 minutes drive from Norwich. Definitely worth the small drive to see such lovely animals.
I realise the weather is looking grey but Africa Alive is open all year round. I’m a zoo lover and I would most certainly visit this one all year round, come rain or shine.
The lemur enclosure is one of the highlights. Loads of lovely ring tailed lemurs in an enclosure you can walk through. It’s probably not a good idea to touch the little guys because they can bite but you can get so close. I could’ve spent the whole day in there watching them eat, leap from platforms, swing on ropes and play in the trees.
And if you’re into your photography the lemurs know how to pose. There are some amazing photo opportunities to be had.
There’s also an amazing group of lions – you can’t walk through their enclosure though – and you can view them from above. We spent a good amount of time watching them sun bathe, it never ceases to amaze me just how kitten-like such massive cats can seem at times.
There’s all manner of other animals including loads more lemurs, meerkats, otters, various cattle, tigers, antelope and giraffes.
There’s a beautiful part of the park called ‘The African Plains’ and it’s home to elephants, rhino, giraffes and ostriches. They all cohabit and a particular treat is the jeep ride that you can take through them for a little extra money.
While we were there we were also able to catch a bit of the summer entertainment. Firstly an amazing troupe of African dancers who were entertaining, funny and colourful. We watched both of their shows for the day. Secondly we caught the falconry demonstration, which was also hilarious but terribly informative too.
We took a picnic and ate in a wasp infested picnic area but there were some food establishments, definitely the best choice now that it’s getting a bit colder.
A really lovely zoo and all the exhibits are brilliantly laid out so you can get the best views of the animals as possible. Take a look at some more photos below.
