Roller derby is the coolest thing you can do on eight wheels. It’s a great way to learn a new skill, meet fantastic people and get fit. Luckily for you, The Norfolk Brawds make it possible for anyone to learn to play the sport. The next start date for the six week course is August 4th at 7pm until 10pm at Funky’s in Norwich and it’s just £20. If you don’t want to commit that much time then you can come along to one session for £5. For full details scroll to the bottom of this post.

What the hell is it?

From the Norfolk Brawds website: “Modern roller derby is an international, full contact, amateur sport. It is played by two teams of fourteen. Five members of each team are on the track at any given point. Game play consists of a series of short matchups (“jams”) in which both teams skate in the same direction around an oval designate with a player (the “jammer”) scoring points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer.”

Do I need to be able to skate?

Nope. If you can’t skate, you’ll be taught.

What do I need to bring?

Yourself and either £20, if you want to sign up for the six weeks, or £5 for the one session. All the kit and skates are provided but if you have your own, feel free to bring them along.

But I’m not very fit

It doesn’t matter, you can learn the skills at every fitness level. You’ll get fitter, stronger and faster as the weeks go on. Some off skates training is recommended to build up your fitness levels but some of the more experienced skaters can help you with that.

How do I get derby fit?

Even if you don’t think you’re fit enough, come along to a session. You might surprise yourself. In between sessions, work on leg strength (squats, lunges, wall sits), core strength (plank, crunches, boxing, press ups) and endurance (swimming, walking, running, rowing, cross trainer).

Where do I sign up?

That’s the spirit! Just bring yourself (and a friend!) along to a Monday session at Funky’s at 7pm. The next Sportivate course starts on 4th August (other start dates: 6th October, 1st December, 2nd February 2015), this is the best way to get the most for your money. You can come to other Monday sessions for just £5 to test the waters. If you need more information, check out the Norfolk Brawds on Facebook or email level1@norfolkbrawds.com
