The Reindeer Pub & Kitchen on Dereham Road in Norwich has had a troubled history. The business has changed hands so frequently over the past 10 years it’s hard to keep track of what it has to offer.
Recently, my brother decided that The Reindeer Pub & Kitchen was the perfect location for a goodbye meal before heading off to India so I met him there at 6pm with my husband and 5 year old daughter in tow. Being so early we were almost the sole occupants of the large bar area, but the tables did begin to fill up over the next hour or so.
The menu looks very impressive, although there’s not a huge amount of choice for vegetarians. For my starter I shared a wonderful, coarse pate (pigeon or partridge I think, something gamey) with my kid, whilst my husband devoured his sweetcorn fritters and my brother ate his so quickly I never even saw it!
Our mains arrived in good time and were also rather impressive. Fish and shoestring chips, a game pie which looked like a work of art, tender pork belly and, for my daughter, a bowl overflowing with whitebait. Needless to say, all our plates were emptied rather quickly.
I was so full I couldn’t manage a dessert, my brother and his darling niece shared a bright and fresh fruit crumble after the little one had already polished off a huge slice of cheesecake. A very satisfied table of diners indeed.
Even if you don’t want a slap-up meal, The Reindeer Pub & Kitchen has a huge range of real ales, I chose a lovely, strong IPA in honour of my brother’s impending travels. The bar snacks look incredibly tempting too, and the ‘Bloody Mary Oyster Shots’ are an absolute must.
